Rober Rudolph Remus also known as Sgt. Slaughter is an American voice actor as well as a retired professional wrestler as well as a WWE Hall of Famer. He is best known for his time in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) and his patriotic American soldier character. With a career spanning over two decades, Sgt. Slaughter became an icon in the wrestling world and a household name among wrestling fans.
Sgt. Slaughter’s career
Robert Rudolph Remus was born in Detroit, Michigan, and grew up with a strong interest in sports. He was a former U.S. Marine who proudly served his country before pursuing a career in professional wrestling. Remus began his wrestling journey in 1974, working for the American Wrestling Association (AWA) under his real name and being trained by WWE Hall of Famer Verne Gagne. His dedication and hard work in the AWA helped him develop the skills and character that would eventually lead to his success in the wrestling world.
Sgt, Slaughter’s WWE career took off in the 1980s. During his WWE days, he portrayed his character as a Patriotic American soldier. He captured the WWF World Heavyweight Championship and headlined WrestleMania VII which was held in 1991. Slaughter rejoined the WWE in 1990 and took part in one of the most notorious episodes in the company’s history.
Slaughter asserted that after the Cold War with the Soviet Union ended, America had become complacent and had done the unimaginable during the Gulf War by siding with Iraq. When Slaughter defeated The Ultimate Warrior at Royal Rumble 1991 with the assistance of “Macho King” Randy Savage, he earned his first and only World Title despite the distractions of death threats from outraged Americans.
Sgt. Slaughter made numerous returns to the WWE with the most recent one being on Raw on August 10, 2009, where he appeared as a special guest. During this appearance, he made fun of Canadians and mentioned how the USA is the greatest country in the world. He even made an appearance on SmackDown on October 2, 2009, during which clashed opinions with Iron Sheik regarding which country was the greatest, USA or Iran.
