TOPEKA, KS (CelebrityAccess) — Downtown Topeka Foundation has tapped venue management firm Spectra to oversee construction and eventually management of the under-construction Evergy Plaza.
Located at the northeast corner of 7th & Kansas Avenue, Evergy Plaza is designed as a flexible open-air public gathering place that features the 50 foot Capital Federal (CapFed) On 7th Stage for live performances, a large digital display screen, water features, and a fire pit.
When it opens, the plaza will host upwards of 200 events a year, including concerts, farmers markets, yoga classes, and more. During the summer, the plaza will host the Topeka Lodging Association’s splash park by day and water show at night and in the winter, the water features will turn into a skating rink.
“We’re excited for Spectra to fill the plaza with vibrant offerings and create a “Connecting Place” for the entire community in the heart of our city,” Pat Michaelis, Chairman, Downtown Topeka Foundation, said. “In our search, we hoped to find a partner that would be deeply committed to the people of Topeka, but also have the business savvy to lead a project of this magnitude—Spectra fits the bill perfectly on both counts. John Knight is a proven local leader. We couldn’t be more pleased to have John lead the Evergy Plaza team.”
District General Manager for Spectra, added: “John is the perfect fit to lead this project in downtown Topeka. Having spent his entire professional life at the heartbeat of this community, we couldn’t think of a better person to guide the direction of Evergy Plaza,” added Spectra’s Keller Taylor.
Funding for the project comes from multiple public and private sources, including donations from local businesses, guest taxes and from the Tourism Improvement District, which is supported by the Topeka Lodging Association.
The plaza is expected to open in March 2020.
